Mother Earth’s Thoughts

I turn slowly,
This pregnancy heavier,
More bothersome than the last.

After so many births
You’d think I’d just roll over
In the sky and release those babies
Smooth as an old bitch
Birthing a litter.

But I’ve had a lot
Of miscarriages lately;
Still haven’t got the blood stains
Out of the sheets.

And this one—?
I hope she comes through alright
I know it’s a she—
There’s a certain ancient
Kick a mother gets to know
About her babies inside.

Besides, the girls are always feisty
At first.

Well, I can still turn
And I better wipe up the mud
The boys keep leaving
On the floor
And get those sheets washed
So she can at least have
A clean place to lay
When she comes.
